Dentalium shells have been used as decorative beads and symbols of wealth for thousands of years. Gathered on the west coast, they were widely traded among Indigenous peoples across North America. This hands-on workshop will teach you how to make your own pair of dentalium earrings, using sinew, beads, and shells. The workshop fee includes a short presentation on the history of dentalium, as well as guided instruction, materials and admission to the Bill Reid Gallery.

Kathleen Anderson is a Michif and Anishinaabe artist from Treaty 1 territory in Manitoba who focuses on beadwork, quillwork and jewelry making. She is currently studying First Nations Studies and Linguistics at Simon Fraser University.
